That's absolutely not the case. A switched hub does just that it makes interconnections between nodes with buffer, media and speed conversion. Switched hubs don't need to be 'pre-programmed' to do this - in particular, reconfiguration of port speed on switched hubs should be done automatically. Managed hubs specifically provide a mechanism for remote configuration and reporting.
