>Let's be careful not to generalize. I wouldn't say "FORGET SET FILTER" or "NEVER USE PUBLIC VARIABLES". Instead, "LIMIT USAGE OF SET FILTER AND PUBLIC VARIABLES". Without seeing the specific situtation and business contraints that a particular app funcationality faces, you can't say that using Set Filter and public variables is inherently bad.

I fully agree. Too many of are poisened by the SQL and C/S stuff. SET FILTER was and still is a powerfull mechanism in the xBase standard.
For example, In my applications I allow users to filter live data (native tables, so no views etc.) on any inputfield they want. I certainly don't want to create indices etc for filtering. SET FILTER comes inhandy here.
