The amount that authors of magazine articles and utilities are usually paid is ridiculously low, to the point of being just a token. I don't think this is an argument at all. If fair value were given to the authors of the utilities and code posted online, the magazines wouldn't be able to stay in business, because that content is too valuable. If you are writing technical articles for a magazine, with rare exceptions, you aren't doing it for a living.
