If you don't have the database available to you, then the alternative is to examine the header of the .DBF file using low-level I/O to see if the backlink is present if you can't error-trap; the file structure of .DBFs is contained in the Appendix of the VFP Programemr's Guide in the On-Line Help.

A better approach would be to have the customer send you the database rather than just the one data file if that's feasible.
