MS does have some sophisticated filters in place to keep the spam out now. MVPs have a method to alert the newsmaster of anything that slips through and it's quickly deleted. I don't put my real email address in, I use
sendnospam@worldnet.att.net to eliminate spam, which also helps to prevent people from sending email replies and keeps the content in the ng. If a person wants my email address they can get it from my website and my sig there has a link to it.
The newsgroups are not the cesspool they once were.
