It's not documented in the system capacities, but in fact the path does have a limit, which I discovered the same way you did . Seems to be 255.

The only workaround I can suggest, which is what I had to do, was shorter folder names. By doing this, I was able to get what I wanted, which is about a dozen entries in my path when I pick a particular project.
