for the bottom frames? At least something a little lighter than the pumpkin color. I wonder if the two sides should be the same color but one side slightly lighter/darker? Or, if you've ever seen sites that use an alternating color (like www.onebox.com) for a background, something like that in the right color might work.
The other thing I'd want would be to have the poster's name, and posting date/time below the subject. Some nice rollover scripts on the links would also be slick. I'd still want the option for the pictures, since it's nice having a face to go along with the poster, even if it increases the bandwith.
But, I agree, it might be time for a facelift.
