It appears to be a step in the right direction. Not a great fan of showing table borders, except where necessary, to aid the user in navigation. I prefer bgcolors.
My gut reaction to the UT interface, particularly when I first saw it, is that it is amateurish (not meant as a knock on anyone).
FWIW, I feel that any re-design should incorporate following order of importance:
1. Speed
2. Utility
3. Good looks
