The serif fonts are preferred at the resolution that professional printers use, pick a major newspaper or magazine that uses sans serif fonts for the body text.
I think you and Dave are right on this one. I've read things that say serifs help guide the eyes, but others say that serifs cause the eyes to move more and the brain interpret more stuff.
