I'd only put up with it on a NetWare volume; NetWare's hashing and caching of the directory indexes really helps file open/close performance on overpopulated directory structures. OTOH, I'd never be able to figure out which file I wanted, so if I ran into this, I'd likely go postal and hunt down the perpetrator. Isn't severe overpopulation of a directory grounds for termination with extreme prejudice? < g >
