I know you are alerting us (thanks, btw) and have resolved this for yourself, but just a thought here.

Since the older versions are fixed, would it not make more sense to start the case statement (preferable over an IF, I think, too) with the oldest OS version, first, so that new (unknown versions) fall thru to the OTHERWISE?
