CDX doesn't mean it would be opened by default. If you want to open and update by default than let them have the same name as the table and table be marked as a table with "structural" index file. The easiest way to the it, when you create the table (or modify an existing) create the indexes in the designer. Of course you could do it outside of the designer w/o specifying a CDX file.
