So, why don't you use a Logical field that allows .NULL. values?
.NULL is unknown value. If you use a checkbox, a .NULL. value is displayed as a different color and checked. It's value can be entered with the mouse as checked or unchecked, and if you do Ctrl-0 when the field has focus, it resets it to .NULL.
