The Left frame looks greate but could use a few minor tweaks.

-The shadows could be smaller as Nick mentioned and also should show a little on the bottom of each button. They look like half shadows now.

-Try to make each of the graphic icons on the buttons the same size. I would also make them a little smaller so there is white space on all sides of the icons, some touch the edge of the buttons now. That will help make the buttons more readable. Look at the bottom 4 buttons to see what I mean.

-If you change 'Create message' to 'New message' it will fit the button better and not encroach on the icon.

-I would also change 'Knowledge base' to either a shorter word or abbreviate it. Then you could add a graphic to that button as well. Just to keep each button consistent.

-I like the shorter buttons for the 'Messages, Replies, Marked, Private' but I would also suggest leaving some white space between the buttons above. Just to help seperate them from the other buttons and enforce that they have different actions.

-You could also move all of the text on the buttons to right slightly (1 or 2 pixels). They are bleeding into the edge of the frame.
