No Necessarily. The unread messages are actually messages posted since your last login. In reality, you may actually "read" a message, but it still show up on that list. What you can do, by pressing the icon, is set your last "read" message to the last message that was posted, thus, clearing out your "unread" messages.
Accoss the top frame that I am proposing, you could have a series of hyperlinks that would change the contents of what is now the upper frame. For clarity, you could have a title that states the type of messages that appear in the tree.
