Also worth noting (to add to what Bruce, and Erik said) Rob is asking about a move from foxpro 2.6 (Non-OOP) to Visual Foxpro (OOP) and there is a learning curve to do things right in OOP.
I would suggest that Rob get any version of Visual Foxpro just to learn with if he does not want to fall behind. I have been using VFP 5.0a and do not have any of the problems mention earlier.
So my advice to Rob is: If you want to continue to program in FoxPro you will have to learn Visual Foxpro.
