>I'm displaying a grid and now I need to use the grid as a pick list. Don't ask how that happened. I have added a button that will do some data changes that depend on the selected row in the grid. However, when I click on the button the grid loses focus and therefore reports no activerow.

I won't ask how that happened because happened to me too and I posted a class doing it long ago :) Download from files\classes section "Two grid classes". Hope helps. If you don't want to use it instead of ActiveRow, recno() might be a lifesaver.
