300 items in a grid won't by itself be any less of an end-user torture. It's debateable how long a list can be before it becomes cumbersome. I haven't seen much discussion of alternatives. I suppose that a listbox that gets too long needs to be replaced by a search form that would return a shorter list. That form is not an improvement unless it's very well designed.
Instead of a grid with check boxes, I prefer a "mover" box made of a listbox, another listbox for the selected items, and buttons to select and deselect items. It's much easier to see the selections. I could perhaps send Nadya mine, if she likes. I never got around to making it respond to double-clicks (maybe I'll look into that now), so someone else probably has a better one.
