>Knowledge of VFP is only one thing to consider. You need to think long and hard about the business aspects. Can you handle sales and marketing? What about accounting? How about taxes? What about health insurance (may not be an issue in UK, but it is in the US). Can you live if you go a couple of months without getting any payments from clients? How will you deal with the problem clients? How good are you at estimating the time required to develop an application? How are you documenting skills?

Good advice, Craig. In considering all of the things you mentioned, I would add Time Management to your list. It is often difficult to get out and be a salesman (i.e., hustling up that next contract) while you are working on an existing job, so be prepared to work 12-16 hour days. Also, all that sales/marketing time you have to put in is non-billable.
