John, one way would be to turn off the plus/minus pictures and use your own plus/minus images in an associated image control. You would have to programmaticly change the pictures as a node is expanded or contracted.

I kinda thought that the standard plus/minus pictures changed with different fonts and font sizes, but I could be wrong there.
