I believe you [UK and Europe in general] think of Yanks or Yankees as all of United States. In the US, southerners refer to Yankees as those living in the northeast part of the country. Some even consider any northern State as Yankees And
Yankee is usually not a term of endearmentwhen used by a southerner. Most consider the term
Damn Yankees as 1 word and inseperable.
