To tell you the truth, i cannot garantee you that NVL is quick or not!
One thing has scared me at your message: your friend uses SELECT * FROM ...? That can become a problem! At the last Microsoft event i went, they advise us not to use many SELECT * FROM ..., because we could get many performance problems.
