>>The Economist, but they cost a lot more. Online edition is cheaper. Some of their articles are given free on www.economist.com which is tantalizing. They don't have much coverage specific to Canada, unless there is a Canadian edition I didn't know about. Come to think of it, are there any Canadian news magazines?

It is liberal and conservative. It has a true liberal's staunch belief in freedom for individuals and businesses, and in the power and responsibility of government to help people without burdening them. It also has a true conservative's caution about change and belief in rigorous economics. Americans would do well to read it and learn the real meaning of those words. Their views scatter widely on the American political spectrum - they are virulently anti-union and hostile to environmentally-based trade regulation, which seems right-wing here. They also favor narcotics legalization, based on strict conservative economic principles, which seems radical here. They favor strict gun control because they are Europeans who find our gun culture disturbing, but would not ban guns for the same reason they would not ban drugs, because it makes no economic sense.

I don't know how their views would look on the Canadian political spectrum, or whether Canadian politicians abuse the words "liberal" and "conservative" the way ours do.

Time, Newsweek, and U.S.News are intended for people who are either too busy, too poor, too dull-witted, or too remotely located to buy and read a decent daily newspaper. To be fair, I haven't read them much in a long time, so I could have missed any number of good articles.
