Hi, Charlie.
IBM is pushing Java hard despite having issues with Sun's branding process. I'm guessing that there will be a strong corporate bias within IBM to develop in Java. And as I have said before, with very large players like Sun and IBM pushing Java, a majority of developers will eventually follow that lead.
Most comments I've heard on the J++ IDE are positive. MS will have to overcome the NIH attitude but eventually I think they will get on board.
Since IBM is the foundry for the Crusoe chips, I'm sure that more than one person there is thinking about a Java Code Morpher. If such a Java CPU is produced, I would imagine it would be employed as a co-processor to a X86 compatible CPU. Or more likely, multiple Code Morphers would be employed simultaneously on the same CPU.
I won't be satisfied until the response time for 99% of the things that my users do is under a tenth of a second.
