I was there 2 months ago, and the French Quarter was quite an experience. Just several blocks of old warehouse-looking buildings and quaint balconied apartments / hotels , with people, food and music everywhere. Friday night was wall-to-wall people in the streets, and there were bands in every little bar, restaurant, club, and hole-in-the-wall. A few were *very* good.

I didn't get to any of the high-class clubs -- just wandered the streets for a few hours.
