I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Colin, but this has been a known issue for a long time. It affects FoxPro versions 2.x, 3.0, and 5.0. There is a patch for VFP 5.0 available from MS. There are workarounds for the other versions. See Article ID Q176481 in the MS knowledge base for more information. LUPDATE() works fine in VFP 6.0.
