Whether it's printing to a file or to an actual printer, a Windows printer driver is still being used. Trying a different one (perhaps an earlier, simpler but compatible model, preferably from the W98 CD) is a straightforward thing to try.

If that makes no difference, another thing to check would be your network client. If you're using Novell's Client32, some older versions have some known issues.
