I haven't got time to go into detail so here's an idea:-

Try intercepting the keystrokes and identifying where the user is in the textbox.

Another option (just came to me) would be to trap the tab or enter (LASTKEY()=9 or 13) and check the length of the input?

I don't know how well either of these will work, but give them a try.
