HIdden variables are not difficult at all to spoof, it just takes a little time to do it. Cookies, OTOH, are VERY difficult (impossible?) to spoof. Depends on your needs. If security/spoofing is a real concern, you don't really have a choice- you ahve to go with cookies. But if a wide audience is highest priority, you might want to use URL parameters (hidden form variables can be a pain to maintain state, because every link has to come from a form.)

My personal preference is cookies- if the user doesn't accept 'em, he needs to get with the times.
