Auctions ending on eBay (where I operate) in the downtime, for example, didn't get late bids. I've heard it said that catching the perps may be very difficult, due to the type of anonymous, delayed, maze-oriented attacks, with no traceable remnants of code.
Some of these sites may have to resort to logons for virtually all features to keep out the hackers, or at least make them more traceable. We may see more of this type of security soon...
