I haven't tested this, Malcolm, but do you have updateable fields in the Child table? Try setting the view so that only fields in the PARENT table are updateable. If you can do a LOJ that way, then the problem is in the child table - no record, no updating, so the view simply removes the possiblility of having to update a 'null' record.
