I know you were looking for a QUAD fix, the reason why I think a book is (was) necessary is that the Unix file system (and device handling, and all kinds of other things in *nix) is a very different beast (actually more elegant once you get it) than Windows, and so it would be hard for someone to explain in a threaded discussion, and beneficial if you were ever going to look at a unix box again.
I have a lot of unread, or unfinished books, and every time I think I will never look at that one again, that's when I get stuck on something, and that book comes in handy.
Not meant as a criticism, you needed a quick fix (which is why I took a stab at it), just agreeing with Ed that it would probably have been more practical.
