Why would you want to index a memo field? IMHO, indexing a memo field makes no sense, but I don't want to be accused of tunnel vision so....

The easiest way is to add a indexed field to your table and extract the first ten or twenty characters from the memo field and copy them to this new field. Assumeing the data entry is controlled by a single source, you can update the field each time the memo is updated. Otherwise, you could run a nightly routine to update the indexed field.
