Good observation. XML in, XML out, HTTP transport -- what language/OS is on each end and in between doesn't matter.

Now that VB gets OOP, it should no longer be intimidated when standing beside VFP. I think the "powers that be" think they will be laughed at if they add the words "or Visual Foxpro" -- legacy and all that crap.
