On method might be comparative projections of ratios between the products based on registrations, logins on newsgroups, attendance at seminars, surveys, statistics published by trade magazines based on *their* surveys, etc, etc.
You could average out several such comparisons, weighting them according to known disparities, ignoring some that are clearly out of balance (UT Fox vs UT VB for example), and come up with some fairly accurate estimates.
