This is true.
I was working in one part of an application recently that had over 500
fields per record. I split this up so that the parent record had 25
fields and each of the child records (up to 5 per parent, in this case)
each had 115 fields.
However, in another part of the same application (with fully normalized
tables) a parent has 100 fields and a child has 189 fields (soon to jump
to over 200).
