Thank you for you very prompt and very correct response.

After days of blindly searching elsewhere, I discovered yesterday that my venerable DESCE (Description-English) field that I've used for years was to blame. Never had a problem in FPW or VFP. Changed it to DESCENG and all worked well.

I am still wondering, though, how I could have seen the update SQL statement that caused the error. The 'See SQL' option seems to show you the 'Select', not the 'Update' portion. Any ideas ?
