Sorry for the delay answering,

If your tables are open in VFP from the command window (as a browse, for example) with optimistic buffering do they update? How is the child table being displayed? Grid? If so are you using the grid controls to pick the correct data or are you using a parameterized view? Any thing else you can tell us about the system would be helpful too.
