NT4 video drivers run at the i386 Ring 0, that is, the core OS can be corrupted by a bad driver. Download the latest one if you haven't already.

I once ran into a video driver issue that couldn't be resolved except with a drive wipe - it was an original nVidia driver for an early Riva128-based card.

One thing you can try is to install NT with plain-Jane VGA, then install SP6, then try setting up the hardware-specific video driver... or do driver first, then SP6.

Once NT is set up with a good driver, it's way better than 9x... I encourage you to stick with it.
