"Indices" refers more to the counters within one index, at least from a mathematical perspective. Like if you index on one variable, then you can discuss indices (sort order record numbers) within the number of records indexed. If you have a separate index on each of 2 or more variables, than these are collectively "indexes"...mathematically speaking. :~)
