Hmmm... actually, you're right. It does work. This must be fairly recent though, because I tested this a while back (around NS 3.02 days) and it didn't work.
John is using the wwShowCursor class which auto generates the table for the query, so putting the VALIGN in the TR tag is definitely saving some bytes coming down from the server.
As to performance, generating the list manually would still be faster rather than relying on the generic ShowCursor() stuff...
