Not sure that I'm reading this correctly, but just to be clear: You *can* return a value created as LOCAL or PRIVATE.

For example:

function DivideByTwo
lparameter lSomeValue
local lReturnVal
lReturnVal = lSomeValue / 2
return lReturnVal
