Jeff,

When you say "I wrote the exam" it sounds like you created the exam (whereas Microsoft and various MVP's WROTE the exam). Instead you may want to say "I TOOK the exam", meaning you sat down and completed the questions.

It was probably just confusing for USA Americans. It's pretty common usage in other parts of the world.
