If the client's needs are not overly complex ( which is most often not the case) we have used a combination of option buttons and grids with a column to check items on a list.
For example:
in a case of marketing prospects the intial dialog uses option buttons to asks the user to choose one or more basic options - 1.Product Interest: All or Specific, 2. Geographic Area: All,USA,International 3.State/Province: All, Specific. Based on the choices the next step builds a list and shows it to the user. If they want to see the prospects for Texas and California ( in human terms) they check off both states and continue. Anything not checked is not considered. The select uses an OR, the user is happy and does not have to deal with more than their own job.
