Thanks Mike, and you pegged it exactly correctly.

As I hope I had noted, it turned out not to be "evil". But some option to get out (by the software doing this) would have been helpful.

My guess is that Outlook is still listed as your default newsgroup reader, but you had not read any newsgroups (don't blame you) after you installed IE5 (along with OE5). When you click the link, OE sees that the files are an old version and converts them. Nothing evil about the link, so don't blame Garrett. :-)
