Most web server software allows the specification of "default" document names. If specified, then when a URL specfies only a folder, and that folder contains a document with the default name, it is displayed. The most common settings are "default.htm" and "index.htm", but depending on platform and server software, others are often used as well. For example, using MS IIS with Active Server Pages, I might well include "default.asp" among my list of default document names.
