If the field is numeric and the label is left of the field, it is because the value is being right justified, and the value is not large enough to fill the field. If the label is to the right of the field, and the field contains a text value, it is because the value is left justified and is not large enough to fill the text field. If the results you are seeing are being observed in the contents of a text file created with the TO ASCII clause, it's because the TO ASCII clause sucks.
