FWIW, my experience has been the opposite with Dell. But I've always purchased the 3 year, on-site, next day service plan for laptops, since traveling with them is so much a problem.
Sorry to hear your experience sucked. I've owned...um 3 of their laptops and my next will be Dell, too, probably.
