I think that's a cop out. That makes the assumption that all buttons are created equal and that's not the case. In the *real* world, color is used to convey a message. Red means stop or danger. Why shouldn't we be allowed change the color of a button. VB (MS pride and joy) allows this.
You can fake it by using a button with a label or shape over it. I don't know if its here but I found Colorbtn at CompuServe (can I say that here *g*) which gives you that.
