We had demos from 3 companies before we selected CR (& CI) from Seagate. The other 2 (can't recall the names) were similar but not quite as flexible and nearly as costly. The main reason we had to go with CR is that it can combine multiple DB products into one report. If you don't require that, I would look at Foxfire or similar. Easier and cheaper...

We've ended up mostly just building a lot of different cursor/view report templates in VFP & PB, now that PB has a report tool like vfp. Very few users really needed something as strong as CR.

The other option we have incorporated a lot recently is that much data can be exported to Excel (via OLE server) within our apps - then users can do as they please with the data, since most users are pretty good with Excel here. That keeps them quiet & pretty happy. That's the first thing I do now if a user wants some fancy report but is not quite sure how they want it designed - put a button on a form that says "Export to Excel" :) Let them do their own...
